There is no cure for peripheral artery disease (PAD) but lifestyle changes such as weight loss and regular exercise and medications (such as cholesterol lowering statins, blood pressure tablets and baby blood thinners such as aspirin and plavix) can help optimise the condition and halt disease progression. If PAD goes untreated, there is a chance it may progress into chronic limb threatening ischaemia leading to rest pain and gangrene, the most severe state of PAD, that can lead to loss of the affected limb and potentially life threatening. One in five people with PAD, if left undiagnosed and untreated, will suffer a heart attack, stroke or death within 5 years! However, if PAD is caught early it is readily treatable.
