Varicose veins don’t go away on their own and there are no home remedies or medications to reverse the faulty valve or vein wall process. The good news is that today, varicose veins can be readily treated using a variety of keyholes procedures that can be performed as a day-case procedure with minimal post procedure pain and downtime.
Larger varicose veins are generally treated with laser, radiofrequency (RFA) or microwave treatment. There are new techniques which are even less invasive such as cyanoacrylate glue embolization (VenaSeal) or mechano-chemical ablation (MOCA or ClariVein), which can theoretically block the refluxing truncal vein through one tiny incision at the ankle, which does not require a stitch! In some cases, a combination of treatments may work best but this very much depends on the pre-treatment ultrasound scan or Duplex vein map that your vascular specialist will perform. Smaller varicose veins and spider veins are usually treated with foam or injection sclerotherapy or laser therapy on your skin.
