Varicose Veins

What is the leading cause of varicose veins, what are few reasons that this happens in the legs?

Varicose veins are a common vascular condition caused by weakened or damaged vein walls and faulty valves in the legs. Veins have one-way valves inside them that open and close to keep blood flowing toward the heart from the foot. Faulty valves and vein wall damage can cause blood to pool and even flow backwards. This is called venous reflux. The veins may grow larger and become distorted, resulting in tortuous twisted veins under the surface of the skin. There is a genetic component to varicose veins and happens more frequently in females and runs more commonly on the maternal side of the family. Contrary to belief, varicose veins do not occur naturally in the arms.

Varicose veins may form whenever blood pressure increases inside your leg veins. This can happen because of pregnancy, being overweight and being frequently constipated and straining on the toilet. You may also be at a higher risk for varicose veins if you are older, sit or stand for long periods, have an inactive lifestyle, or had a previous DVT.
